Place & story

A cottage remembered

Writing in the Roscommon Herald in March 2026, Alan Beirne described his family's O'Brien cottage at Moyne outside Loughglynn. He dated it to 1749, a family account rather than an independently verified building date. His childhood recollections included carrying buckets of water from a well through the fields. The article records the house as a place of family memory across successive generations. [2]

Objects of domestic life

Beirne's account describes an open hearth with an iron crane, cast-iron cooking pots, a settle bed and a kitchen dresser. He recalls his grandmother returning from work at Loughglynn Convent to sleep in the cottage. Farm tools and an oil lamp also appear in his description. These remembered objects connect the building with domestic work and farming, rather than the grander houses usually documented in estate histories. [2]

The wider townland

The 1851 census places Moyne in Tibohine parish within the barony of Frenchpark. It records 362 people there in 1841 and 314 in 1851. Inhabited houses declined from 66 to 54 during that decade. These are figures for the townland surrounding the locality, not a separate village total or a count of the cottage's occupants. The table does not explain the individual causes of population change.
