Place & story

Watching the road

The Scramoge ambush took place on 23 March 1921. In his later Bureau of Military History statement, IRA officer Luke Duffy recalled scouts monitoring military and police traffic on the Strokestown–Longford road. One scout living beside the road kept a daily tally. Duffy and Pat Madden then visited Leavy’s house at Scramogue while preparing the operation. His account places reconnaissance and local knowledge at the centre of the preparations. [2]
