Place & story
A nineteenth-century parish
In 1837 Samuel Lewis described Taghmaconnell as a parish on the road from Ballinasloe to Roscommon, with 4,418 inhabitants across more than 12,000 acres. His account noted bogland, abundant limestone and improving agriculture. It listed several substantial residences, including Fighill and Keoghville. These figures and properties describe the wider parish, rather than a village population or a compact town centre. [2]
Schools and religious remains
Lewis recorded a Catholic chapel and three private schools, one occupying a building provided by parishioners. He also described religious ruins at Taghmaconnell, Clonohill and Ballinnina, alongside former Keogh-family castles. Certain lands still paid a Crown rent known as monastery money, which his account associated with the former nunnery at Ballinnina. [2]
Joining neighbouring communities
Taughmaconnell became part of the new Pádraig Pearses team in 1962, joining Moore and Creagh. A later club tribute recalled the involvement of Moore footballer Tom Turley in bringing the organisation together and his subsequent leadership. His contributions extended to Scór cultural competitions as well as football. The merger established a lasting sporting and cultural link between the three communities. [3]
