Place & story
Gothic detail in local stone
St Baoithín’s Catholic Church was built in 1858 to designs by Weightman, Hadfield and Goldie. Its cruciform form has a four-bay nave, projecting side chapels and a bellcote above the entrance. Rock-faced limestone walls and stepped buttresses give the exterior its strongly textured appearance. [2]
Pointed windows have dressed limestone surrounds and stained glass, with a rose window at the chancel. The national architectural survey recorded an original altar, side altar, communion rails and timber gallery inside. A four-lobed opening in the boundary wall resembles one at the sacristy; the survey cautiously suggests reused material from an earlier church. [2]
