Place & story

A school beside the church

Threen National School dates its building to 1873, with extensions in 1931 and 2007. Its own history places it beside Saint Caolin’s Church on the Galway road, about seven kilometres from Castlerea, opposite the former village post office. The school retains the spelling Threen, while identifying its home village as Trien. [2]

School and community

The school’s account describes families returning across successive generations, with pupils following parents and grandparents into its classrooms. Following the 2007 extension, further work provided an infant play area in 2009–10 and a garden in 2010–11. It also records links with local sport and drama, including encouragement for pupils to support the Trien Drama Group. [2]

The Trien Players

A contemporary notice by playwright Jimmy Keary records the Trien Players presenting his comedy I’m the One for You at Saint Paul’s Assembly Hall in Castlerea on 6, 7 and 9 March 2014. This gives a dated example of the group’s repertoire and its performances beyond the village; it does not establish when the company was founded. [3]
