Place & story

The Presbyterian church

Graniamore Presbyterian Church dates from around 1840. Its single-cell form, three-bay nave and small western porch reflect a restrained approach to church design. Paired pointed sash windows light the nave, while diamond-paned lancets mark the eastern end. Inside, the architectural survey records timber wall panelling, a carved wooden pulpit and a single aisle. The raised site and decorative entrance gate give the modest building a clear presence beside the road. [2]

The minister’s house

The adjoining manse, built around 1875, stands west of the church. Its two-storey, symmetrical front has a projecting flat-roofed porch with ornamental iron railings around its roof. A fanlight and sidelights frame the entrance, while timber sash windows, hipped slate roofs and yellow-brick chimney stacks retain the character of the nineteenth-century house. Together, church and manse show how a rural congregation provided both a place of worship and accommodation for its minister. [3]

The townland in the census

The published 1901 census places Graniamore in Toomour parish and records fourteen inhabitants in two occupied houses. Its comparison columns show eighteen residents and four houses in 1881, followed by sixteen residents and three houses in 1891. These totals describe the small townland around the church, rather than the full area served by the congregation. Twenty-six outbuildings and farm structures were also recorded in 1901. [4]
