Place & story

Successive school buildings

Sooey's school history dates its first building at the crossroads to 1870. A storm brought down its roof in 1881, and a replacement opened on 9 July 1883. That building served until 1955, when classes moved temporarily to the neighbouring parish hall. Pupils entered the new school on 1 June 1956. The sequence distinguishes the institution's beginnings from the later building that many generations remember as the village school. [2]

People & connections

A school brought back from decline

By 1996 Sooey National School had only eleven pupils and faced closure. Its history credits principal Leo Kearns, the management board and parents with sustaining it. Enrolment recovered, and Kearns retired in 2000 after forty-two years of service. Rising numbers subsequently required additional classrooms, including one completed under a Department of Education pilot scheme in 2004. The school's experience records both rural population decline and the practical work needed to maintain a local institution. [2]

From Sooey to Shamrock Gaels

Sooey won the Sligo senior football championship in 1949 and 1959. Later cooperation with neighbouring Knockalassa produced a combined minor championship-winning team in 1966. The two clubs formally united as Shamrock Gaels at a meeting in Riverstown Hall on 16 March 1972. Paddy Gannon suggested the new name, recalling a team he had played for in London. The club's history presents the merger as a response to two neighbouring teams drawing on a limited pool of players. [3]
