Place & story

Garmany’s Grove at Formil

Garmany’s Grove Presbyterian church stands at Formil in the wider Drumacrib locality. The National Inventory dates the five-bay, single-storey building to about 1800. Its whitewashed roughcast walls, round-headed openings and plain interior reflect a restrained meeting-house design. Inside, the timber boxed pews are a particularly notable survival, described by the survey as rare in County Monaghan. The building sits within a graveyard enclosed by walls and mature trees. [2]

A congregation across the border

Successive maps preserve changes in the church’s recorded name. The 1835 Ordnance Survey labelled it Grove Presbyterian Meeting House; the Griffith valuation map used Gorman’s Grove Meeting House, and the 1908 survey called it Garmoney’s Grove Secession Church. The National Inventory also notes a congregation drawn from both sides of the nearby border. These names and connections distinguish a long-established rural institution from a village church serving only one townland. [2]
