Place & story
From Killybrone school to Clara
St Patrick's National School at Clara marked its fiftieth academic year in 2024. Its account of the celebrations recalls the closure of Killybrone, Bragan and Amackalin schools and their succession by the new Clara school. Parents and former pupils assembled photographs for the anniversary, and a commemorative Mass included a history of the change. The account preserves Killybrone school's place within a wider reorganisation of local primary education. [2]
Teresa Coyle and girls’ education
Teresa Josephine Coyle was born in Killybrone in 1916. She entered the Sisters of Our Lady of Apostles at Ardfoyle in 1935 and became known as Sister Peter. Her congregation's obituary records that in 1947 she joined a team establishing a girls' secondary grammar school in northern Nigeria. She subsequently taught at the OLA Training College in Cape Coast, Ghana, from 1952 to 1960, before returning to educational work in Nigeria. [3]
Teaching and translation beyond Africa
Coyle's later work took her to London between 1974 and 1977, then to an OLA community in Bethlehem. Alongside work with the community's orphanage, she taught English at Bethlehem University. In 1990 she returned to Rostrevor, where her activities included translating French material into English for the congregation. Her obituary, published after her death in January 2010, documents a career extending well beyond the place of her birth. [3]
