Place & story
The corner shop and post office
A house and shop at Shantonagh’s central junction dates to about 1860. Its timber shopfronts face two roads, with glazed display windows divided by small columns and framed by pilasters beneath projecting cornices. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage records that the shop also served as a post office. Substantial outbuildings behind the premises indicate the extent of the business that once operated here. [2]
Constabulary accommodation
The former constabulary barracks in Tullyrain was built around 1880. Its two-storey façade has a regular arrangement of openings, rendered corner stones and yellow-brick chimneys. The adjoining house was constructed for the police sergeant, pairing official accommodation with a residence. When surveyed in 2012, the barracks served as a Garda station. Together the buildings record the provision of policing within the small settlement. [3]
Shantonagh Lodge
Shantonagh Lodge in Dooraa is an earlier house, dated by the architectural survey to about 1820. Its L-shaped plan includes a full-height rear return, while moulded plaster surrounds articulate the windows and entrance. Outbuildings enclose part of the rear, and decorative cast-iron gates and railings mark the frontage. These domestic and working spaces form another element of the village’s surviving nineteenth-century fabric. [4]
