Place & story

Changes of ownership in the 1850s

Robert Sparrow leased Kilmanahan Castle from the Greene estate in 1850. The University of Galway’s estate research records its inclusion in sales of William Greene’s property in July and December 1852, with a lithograph of the castle accompanying the sale notice. Alexander Glasgow bought it and sold it to the Earl of Donoughmore in 1855. These transactions mark a significant change in the estate’s ownership during the mid-nineteenth century. [2]

A lodge from the estate’s redevelopment

A two-storey lodge beside the castle dates from about 1840, when the estate was being substantially redeveloped. Its hipped slate roof, projecting side window and attached wings give it the character of a small house rather than a monumental gateway. The architectural inventory records surviving timber sash windows alongside later replacements. The lodge helps preserve the scale of the residential buildings that supported the larger establishment. [3]

The farmyard and stables

The estate’s farmyard also dates from about 1840. Its buildings include an arcade of three carriage openings and a long stable range with a higher central block. Brick arches distinguish the entrances from the surrounding rubble stonework. The architectural inventory records another two-storey outbuilding as ruined, its slate roof largely collapsed. This group preserves evidence of the horses, vehicles and agricultural work associated with the country-house estate. [4]
