Place & story

An estate adapted for education

Newtown School’s own history dates its foundation to 1798, serving Quaker children from Munster. The estate’s main house became boarding accommodation, while a stable provided classrooms. Decorative features were removed in keeping with Quaker simplicity. The institution subsequently admitted a wider community while retaining its Quaker ethos. These changes gave the older estate a lasting educational purpose within Waterford’s Newtown district. [2]

Gardens, books and practical learning

The school established a library in 1813. Its history describes gardening, tree planting and a farm within the grounds, alongside practical subjects such as woodwork, sewing and beekeeping. Pupils also helped with domestic work. Later facilities included a swimming pool in 1890, a gymnasium in 1892 and a science laboratory in 1895, extending the range of activities accommodated on the site. [2]

People & connections

People who sustained the school

The school remembers groundsman William Burke’s service over more than fifty-five years from the late nineteenth century. Artist Hilda Roberts portrayed him in a pencil drawing. Her husband, headmaster Arnold Marsh, helped the school recover from threatened closure in 1925. This institutional account preserves associations with the people who maintained and reshaped Newtown, alongside the history of its buildings and curriculum. [2]
