Place & story

The surviving church tower

The tower of Castlejordan's former Church of Ireland building bears the date 1823. Though the main church has been demolished, the three-stage tower survives with battlements, pinnacles and limestone buttresses. Pointed openings and dressed stone bands articulate its walls. The graveyard, carved headstones, entrance gates and boundary wall preserve the setting of a church whose full outline must now be understood through its surviving parts. [2]

Holy Trinity at the junction

Holy Trinity Catholic Church occupies the village's main junction beside the former school and water pump. Its cross-shaped plan brings together nave, transepts and chancel. The national architectural survey highlights its pointed stained-glass windows, interior fittings and carved limestone gate piers. Wrought-iron gates and railings stand at the front, while a cast-iron belfry provides a different form of bell support to the older church tower. [3]

A school becomes a community centre

Local historian Noel French records that Castlejordan's school opened in 1909. It became a community centre in 1974 when the new Saint Ciaran's Primary School opened. The change gave an older public building a fresh role rather than ending its association with local communal life. French also records Joseph John Bruntz's designs for the teacher's residence and alterations to the parochial house in the late 1920s. [4]
