Seven decades behind the counter

In a January 2026 interview with Michael Commins, Catherine Delaney recalled beginning work at Tulrahan Post Office in the mid-1950s as an assistant to Monica Delaney. The office later passed to Catherine’s husband Johnny; Catherine became postmistress after his death in 1998. [2]

Her recollections show how postal business shaped village social life. Friday pension collections brought neighbours together at familiar times, while emigrants returning on holiday called in to renew old connections. She also remembered the post-office telephone serving people when few homes had their own. The report announced her retirement and the office’s planned closure that Friday, drawing a long period of local service towards its end. [2]
