Place & story
The old schoolhouse
The Kilskyre Heritage Trail identifies the schoolhouse opposite the Catholic church as dating from 1836. Separate entrances served boys and girls, with girls taught upstairs and boys downstairs. The trail also records surviving entrance plaques and the remains of a cocoa house on the school site. [2]
A new school and changing numbers
Kilskyre National School dates its move into the present building to February 1971. Its own history records 115 pupils in 1989, falling to 39 in 2007 before numbers rose again. Two classes for autistic pupils opened in 2023. [3]
