Place & story
The church building
Saint Ultan’s is dated 1806. Its nave ends in a curved eastern apse, while porches added around 1865 use dressed limestone, cast-iron windows and timber doors. A limestone bellcote rises above the slate roof, and traceried timber windows give the otherwise modest church much of its character. [2]
Community ownership
Worship ended with the service on 31 December 2023, and the church was deconsecrated in 2025. Friends of Rathcore Church announced in February 2026 that it had purchased the building, avenue and car park for approximately €77,000. The group proposed a heritage, cultural, community and environmental education space, supported initially by loans from its three directors. [3]
