Place & story
A courtyard for horses and stores
The stable and outbuilding ranges at Ross House date from about 1780. They enclose a central courtyard, with single-storey ranges connected to a two-storey building at the rear. Rubble walls contrast with carefully dressed limestone around the openings. A pedimented carriage arch gives the working courtyard an architectural centrepiece. [2]
The woodland boathouse
The estate’s boathouse dates from about 1820. Its gable faces outward, with rough-textured stone walls, a timber-boarded upper gable and a pitched metal roof. The architectural inventory notes how the deliberately rusticated stonework gives it the appearance of a picturesque ruin, reinforced by its woodland setting. It forms a group with the house, stables and former gate lodge. [3]
