Place & story

Stackallan House

Stackallan House, also known as Boyne House, dates to about 1715. Built on a broadly square plan, it has three storeys above a basement and two principal façades with pedimented central sections. A steep slate roof reflects late seventeenth-century French fashion. The architectural inventory associates the house with Gustavus Hamilton, who commanded a Williamite regiment at the Battle of the Boyne. [2]

Saint Columba’s first home

Saint Columba’s College occupied Stackallan House from 1843 to 1849. Its first chapel was a converted coach house. The college’s own chapel guide records fittings that travelled with it to its later Dublin campus, including stalls collected by founder William Sewell and a Whitechapel bell given by the first warden, Robert Corbet Singleton. These objects preserve a material connection with the school’s years at Stackallan. [3]

The old church’s surviving fragments

Historian Noel French recorded Stackallen churchyard in 1987. His account explains that the church was demolished after its congregation declined, with important stonework transferred to Slane church. The pieces included a late medieval doorway, a plaque bearing the Barnewall arms and two coffin-shaped medieval tombstones. The churchyard and its recorded inscriptions therefore belong to a history whose architectural remains are partly preserved at another location. [4]
