Place & story
The mill beside the river
The National Inventory dates Wilkinstown’s Mill House to about 1850. Beside the two-storey house, a limestone wall survives from the former mill, including an opening for its waterwheel. The survey also records a millstone and an outbuilding with external steps. These physical remains preserve evidence of the river-powered industry that once occupied the site. [2]
Shane Lodge’s outbuildings
At Shane Lodge, a substantial two-storey outbuilding is also dated to about 1850. Rubble-stone walls contrast with dressed limestone corners and red-brick window surrounds. The former carriage openings have been blocked, but their broad segmental arches remain legible. The inventory draws attention to the building’s unusual scale and the quality of these stone and brick details. [3]
Sheltering the pikemen
The official Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway guide records a local tradition that residents sheltered fleeing pikemen after crown forces caught United Irishmen at Knightstown Bog, north of Wilkinstown, in July 1798. The guide adds that some fugitives settled locally. This is an attributed tradition; it does not identify particular hosts, hiding places or descendants. [4]
