Place & story
From Tonreigh to Ballynahinch
O’Brennan National School opened at Tonreigh, Kielduff, on 16 November 1868. James O’Shea taught the boys and Julia Clifford the girls. Its own history records the move to nearby Ballynahinch in 1949, where a replacement building provided three classrooms and two bicycle sheds. Schools at Renagown and Maugha amalgamated with O’Brennan in 1969. [2]
Another new building
A later building campaign included a parents’ fundraising scheme that raised the required €63,000 contribution. Pupils moved temporarily to Ballybeggan Racecourse in Tralee in June 2011 while the old premises were demolished. The replacement school was completed in June 2012, with eight classrooms and a PE hall. [2]
