Place & story

A village described in 1837

Samuel Lewis described Killinardrish in 1837 as a small settlement on the southern bank of the Lee, connected to Carrigadrohid by an older bridge. He credited R B Crooke of Killinardrish House with forming the village, which comprised cottages with gardens. A constabulary station, a sub-post office serving Cork and Macroom, and recently established fairs supplied further functions beyond the estate. His account records sixty-five inhabitants. [2]

The classical country house

The National Inventory dates Killinardrish House to around 1800 and identifies it as Crooke's former seat. Its entrance centres on an elaborate limestone doorway with Doric pilasters, carved brackets and a pediment. The two-storey front contrasts with a taller rear elevation over the sloping site. Courtyard buildings, the entrance and the gate lodge together record the wider organisation of the estate, rather than an isolated country residence. [3]

A different style at the entrance

Opposite the main entrance stands a former gate lodge built around 1830. Its Tudor Revival design contrasts with the classical treatment of the house: pointed windows with timber tracery, projecting mouldings above openings and diagonally set limestone chimneystacks give it a different character. The National Inventory notes that extensions and modernisation have left important early details intact, including windows, doorway and chimney work. [4]
