Place & story
Seosamh Mac Gabhann in Kilmovee
Seosamh Mac Gabhann became principal of Clooniron National School in Kilmovee in 1955. With fellow teacher Bea Anna Costello, he brought traditional music and Irish-language drama into classroom life. When Clooniron closed in 1972, their work continued at Kilmovee National School. Mayo Genealogy Group's biographical account records all-Ireland children's céilí-band successes in 1976 and 1984, and the foundation of a summer school in his memory in 2011. [2]
A centre serving the community
Kilmovee Community Centre dates its provision of services to 1993. Alongside hall space and training, its work has included laundry services, active-age activities and a community polytunnel. The organisation also developed community housing beside the centre and family resource centre, primarily for older people's independent living. These connected activities place the centre within the practical history of local provision, extending its role beyond a venue for occasional events. [3]
Growing oats to learn straw crafts
The centre's heritage programme documents Kilmovee's participation in Sowing the Seed, a project researching customs associated with straw. The community grew oats to support practical learning about súgán rope and mummers' costumes. Its account names artists Edwina Guckian, Brian Mostyn and Fionnuala Maxwell among those developing the project. This is an attested modern effort to pass on skills through cultivation and workshops, rather than evidence that every associated custom originated locally. [4]
