Place & story
A small school serving distant homes
Killadoon’s national school began with a single room, about thirty-three feet long and sixteen feet wide, serving children from a wide surrounding area. A local history preserved in An Coinneal records that the site was bought from the Lyons family for five pounds. Later road alterations enlarged its cramped yard, and a second classroom followed in 1899. [2]
The dispute over James Burke
The account describes conflict over teacher James Burke after his training at Dublin’s Model School in 1864. Father Curley objected to Burke’s return because of the training school’s Protestant character, while manager Wilbraham supported him. Parents withdrew their children in a strike lasting thirteen weeks in 1869. Burke eventually left around 1871, and Austin Maguire was appointed in 1872. [2]
Joining the school at Killeen
Killadoon’s school closed in 1975 as education in the district moved towards a central school at Killeen. Holy Family School’s own history names Killadoon, Carrowniskey, Thallabawn and Cregganbaun among its predecessor schools. The local retrospective describes children from the closed schools travelling by minibus to Killeen. The merger connected several communities through one school. [3] [2]
