Place & story
The house that became the post office
Garranard’s former post office was originally a residence built for the Anglican curate William H. Brushe in the early 1850s. The local Saints and Sinners heritage tour traces its later use as the main post office for the surrounding district, until postal services moved to a supermarket in the early twenty-first century. The building’s changing purposes connect a nineteenth-century religious mission with the everyday communications of a dispersed rural community. [2]
Schools and religious rivalry
The same heritage project describes Brushe’s school and church on the opposite riverbank, built with support from the Palmer estate. Nearby Ballynagor already had a Baptist school, while the Catholic parish priest, Father McNamara, established a national school close by. These institutions became entangled in disputes over missionary activity. Brushe’s mission ended during the 1870s; the project records that stone from the disused school-church later went into the foundations of a parochial house. [2]
Carn National School
Nearby Carn National School, whose official address includes Garranard, was founded in 1887. Its centenary brought refurbishment and three new classrooms, and a new playground opened in 2007. The community’s school history identifies past pupils whose work reached beyond the district: athletics coach John McDonnell, Mayo footballer Anthony Finnerty and Ragus founder Fergal O’Murchú. Their school connection provides a precise association with the area without making it their birthplace. [3] [4]
Opening the time capsule
On 10 June 2023, former pupils gathered at Carn for the opening of a time capsule organised more than twenty years earlier by principal Pat Dowling. Jimmy Finnerty and Paddy Regan had made its container, which pupils buried in the school lawn with records of everyday life. The recovered material included audio and video that could still be played. Two trees were planted in memory of former principals Peig Jennings and Dowling. [3]
