Place & story
The first national school
Tom Armstrong's history for the 2004 school reunion dates Manulla's first national school to 1 March 1852. Sarah Egan taught the girls and Patrick Hughes the boys in thatched accommodation. An inspector visiting a fortnight later found 36 pupils present out of 90 enrolled. The school closed after a short period, and Armstrong could not identify its exact location. [2]
James Kelly and a new beginning
A further school opened in 1868 in a thatched building supplied by Billy Armstrong. Canon Gibbons persuaded James Kelly to leave Balla National School and become principal in Manulla. Growing attendance eventually required another building at the crossroads, which opened in 1894. The separate boys' and girls' schools were amalgamated in 1942, and a replacement school opened on 4 November 1950. [2]
A rural football club
Manulla FC was founded on 3 May 1976. Beginning in the Mayo League's third division, it won the Division One title in 1981 and the Premier League championship in 1987–88. In 1992, Republic of Ireland captain Mick McCarthy opened its new grounds, comprising two pitches and a clubhouse. A viewing stand was added in 1997. [3]
Success and wider participation
The club received the FAI Club of the Year award in 2007. Its women's teams later won the WFAI Shield in 2016 and Intermediate title in 2017. In 2019, Manulla partnered with Mayo Autism Camp to provide a summer camp for children with additional needs. The FAI's 2022 account records these activities alongside the club's sporting achievements. [3]
