Place & story

The Augustinian shore

The ruins of Murrisk Abbey stand beside Clew Bay beneath Croagh Patrick. The Office of Public Works dates the Augustinian foundation to around 1456 and associates it with Hugh O’Malley. Dedicated to Saint Patrick, the friary became a starting point for the mountain pilgrimage. Its surviving church and domestic buildings preserve the outline of the religious community. [2]

People & connections

John Behan’s famine memorial

John Behan’s National Famine Memorial was unveiled at Murrisk by President Mary Robinson in 1997. The sculpture takes the form of a coffin ship, with skeletal bodies incorporated into it. Its imagery commemorates both the people who died during the Great Famine and the desperate sea journeys associated with emigration. [3]

A fishing community remembered

Murrisk Development Association records that the Congested Districts Board built the pier in 1893–94 to encourage local fishing. The industry remained active into the mid-twentieth century before declining. A Fishermen’s Memorial, created by the association in 2004–05, remembers the boats and people who worked from Murrisk, giving the village’s maritime labour its own place of commemoration. [4]
