Place & story
The house and cenotaph
Dodwell Browne erected the urn-topped obelisk in 1809 in memory of his wife Maria, née O’Donel. Her portrait and a French dedication identify the personal loss behind the monument. The surviving shell of Raheens House belongs to a later generation: it was built in 1847–48 for Hugh John Henry Browne, incorporating at least the footings of an earlier house. [2] [3]
Conservation
Islandeady Heritage Committee’s 2026 restoration announcement records a multi-year conservation project supported by the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and Mayo County Council’s heritage department. Southgate Associates advised on conservation, with masonry work undertaken by Des Rainey’s team. [4]
