Ross West belongs to Turlough civil parish in the barony of Carra. The Placenames Branch archive records the form Ross West among the evidence assembled for the Ordnance Survey in 1838; other entries preserve the shorter Ross. Its documentation includes contributions associated with local informants and surveyors. Ger Mayock’s childhood connection
Artist Ger Mayock grew up in Ross West near Castlebar. A contemporary account of his 2010 retrospective linked his childhood encounters with traditional music and culture to his later creative work. He worked across sculpture, writing, photography, film and musical composition. Wood and stone became particularly important materials in his final years, when carving formed a substantial part of his artistic output. [3]
Meadowsweet at the Linenhall
Four years after Mayock’s death in May 2006, the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar presented Meadowsweet: A Retrospective. Alongside sculpture, the exhibition included his photographs, writings and short film War. An accompanying book celebrated his work, with sale proceeds supporting the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation. The 2010 exhibition brought together the different media pursued by an artist whose early life belonged to Ross West. [3]
