Place & story

A contested pier

Portnoo’s harbour appears in nineteenth-century parliamentary arguments about investment along Donegal’s coast. On 1 July 1887, the local MP Mr O’Hea complained that government money had been spent on a pier which had subsequently broken up. His criticism formed part of a wider appeal for harbour works in districts where farming alone provided an uncertain livelihood. The debate records the demand for usable coastal infrastructure, rather than a secure construction history of the present pier. [2]

Seeking new marine works

The need for a pier at Portnoo returned to Parliament in February 1903. Hugh Law asked whether funds under the Marine Works Act would support construction there, alongside improvements at Portnablagh and other Donegal locations. Chief Secretary George Wyndham deferred an answer until after a conference with representatives of county councils in congested districts. The exchange shows Portnoo competing for a share of a broader coastal programme; it does not establish that the requested work was then approved. [3]

The neighbouring links

The Narin and Portnoo links connect the two neighbouring coastal communities through another strand of local history: seaside recreation. Under new ownership, architects Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner undertook a substantial redesign, introducing tees, greens and contours within the existing linksland. The course’s own account describes a two-year transformation. Dunes of differing sizes and the smaller folds of the ground shaped their approach to the redesigned holes, keeping the coastal terrain central to the course. [4]
