Figures on the Donagh Cross
The Donagh Cross, also known as St Patrick's Cross, belongs to an early Christian group of carved stones near the old church site. The National Inventory dates it to around 650. Interlacing, birds and figures accompany a representation of Christ; smaller flanking stones include a harpist identified as David and an ecclesiastical figure carrying a bell. These carvings bring human figures, biblical imagery and elaborate patterned ornament together on a compact group of monuments.[2]
A market square and four streets
Lewis's 1837 description presents Carndonagh as a small square with four streets, on the route from Derry to Malin. Monday markets and four annual fairs drew business into the town. Carndonagh also headed a coastguard district extending to places including Malin Head, Dunree and Greencastle. This administrative reach connected an inland market centre to the shores around northern Inishowen.[3]
Folklore & tradition
Pilgrims on St Patrick's Day
Lewis's account of Donagh parish records St Patrick's Day pilgrimage to the site. He associated the visits with relics including a penitential bed attributed to Patrick. His notice preserves the calendar date and the devotional focus of the gathering, linking the early church landscape with practices remembered in the nineteenth century.[4]

Ralph Byrne and Albert Power's church
The Church of the Sacred Heart was built in 1941–45 to Ralph Byrne's designs. Its campanile and copper-covered crossing dome rise above the town. Granite masonry, round-headed arches and an expansive cruciform plan give the building its imposing character. Albert Power made the stone figures of Patrick, Columcille, Brigid and the Sacred Heart around the dome's drum. The inventory records their erection on 10 July 1945, the day the sculptor died.[5]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
