The Boyne between two towns
Lewis’s 1837 account describes the Boyne dividing what had been separate boroughs, one on the Louth bank and the other on the Meath bank. Their charters and privileges were granted at different times. This gives substance to the town’s bridge association without relying on a simple translated label: the crossing joined places that were once legally distinct. A river bank in an old address can therefore carry administrative as well as geographical meaning.[2]
Customs and the cost of walls
The directory records repeated grants of tolls, remissions and money for walls and turrets during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Town defence required continuing revenues and repair, not just an initial building campaign. It also describes a shared staple office before the later civic unity. These details connect Drogheda’s trading role with its municipal history and explain why commercial records and corporation records can illuminate the same urban development.[2]
A county of itself
By Lewis’s time Drogheda was described as a county of itself, locally in Louth, with a town population distinct from the larger total. A historical document may thus use a jurisdiction that does not correspond directly to a modern county search. Preserve the bank, parish and original institutional wording. A connection to the port may concern shipping or trade rather than birthplace, and the wider Boyne region should not automatically be equated with residence inside Drogheda town.[2]
Both counts use the 2016 settlement boundary, allowing like-for-like comparison. CSO supplies the 2022 count on this older boundary for comparison only. The official 2022 Built Up Area has different boundaries.
