Place & story

A castle altered over centuries

Malahide Castle grew through repeated alterations by the Talbot family. Its official chronology dates confirmation of their lordship to 1189, the Great Hall to 1475 and the addition of the towers to 1765. These successive building campaigns shaped the house’s familiar outline. [2]

People & connections

Milo Talbot and a public future

Milo Reginald Talbot inherited the castle in 1949. After retiring from the British Foreign Office in 1956, he devoted more time to the botanical collection he was developing in its gardens. His death was followed by a sale of the castle’s contents on 10 May 1976. On 12 June 1977 the castle opened to the public. The gardens preserve the importance of plant collecting in the estate’s later history alongside the furnishings, portraits and architecture of the house. [2]

Folklore & tradition

Puck in print

Constance Louisa Adams included Puck among Malahide Castle’s ghost traditions in Castles of Ireland, published in 1904. Her account establishes a printed record of the castle’s association with that name more than a century ago. [3]
