Place & story

Families arrive in 1977

The parish’s own history dates the first arrivals in the new Killinarden Estate to early 1977, when 342 houses had been completed. Many families came from rented accommodation in or near Dublin’s centre. They moved into an area still being built, initially without shops, schools or community premises. The account records construction continuing until 1982, by which time the wider development comprised about 1,800 houses. [2]

A parish and a permanent church

Killinarden parish was established from Springfield in 1977. Diocesan priests initially served it, before the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart took responsibility in July 1984. The Church of the Sacred Heart on Whitestown Way opened and was blessed on 10 December 1989. These dates trace the establishment of a permanent place of worship alongside the housing development. [3]

A centre for local groups

Killinarden Community Centre opened in 1986 and was enlarged and refurbished in 2002. Its management by Killinarden Community Council gave residents an organisation through which to support local social and cultural activity. The county council’s account records youth activities, an active retirement group and community services among the uses of the building in Killinarden Heights. [4]

Renewing the park

The improved Killinarden Park was formally opened on 27 November 2024, after works begun the previous year. Local schools and sports clubs attended. The project added a lit walking and cycling route, accessible paths, play and exercise areas, a skate ramp and a multi-use games area, while also improving the grass pitches. The council records community involvement in developing the plans. [5]
