Place & story
A nineteenth-century parish landmark
Saint Conleth’s Parish Church was built between 1848 and 1852. The Newbridge heritage trail identifies its dedication with the first bishop of Kildare and the patron of the parish and diocese.[2]
Growth beyond the first design
The trail records major improvements between 1894 and 1897, when the church was enlarged to almost twice its earlier size. A new high altar followed in 1929, with glass installed behind it. These additions make the present building a sequence of investment and adaptation. Nearby Saint Conleth’s Abbey belongs to a separate institutional story, with its own nineteenth-century foundation.[2]
People & connections
Kathleen Lonsdale at Charlotte House
Kathleen Lonsdale, the X-ray crystallographer, was born Kathleen Yardley at Charlotte House in Newbridge in 1903. Her father worked as the town’s postmaster, and the house stands at the corner of Charlotte Street and Henry Street. Kildare Local Studies describes a financially difficult childhood before her mother moved the children to England in 1908.[3][4]
Lonsdale attended the village school briefly before that move. She went on to study physics and build a career in crystallography, with her birthplace later marked by a plaque. Her journey links the post-office household of an early-twentieth-century Kildare town with the international history of science. The Newbridge connection belongs specifically to her first five years.[3][4]
