Place & story

People & connections

William John Roberts at Tullyroan

Astronomer and engineer William John Roberts moved to Tullyroan after his marriage in 1905 and remained there for the rest of his life. He established a workshop and observatory, combining practical engineering with observation of the night sky. Armagh Observatory’s research, drawing on the Seager family archive, connects this local base with his decades of accessible astronomy writing for the Irish Independent. [2]

People & connections

Practical experiments

Roberts worked closely with Armagh Observatory director William F. A. Ellison, buying telescopes from him and having older instruments refurbished. His own observatory remained unheated to avoid disturbing observations. He also built a windmill to charge batteries and made model trains. These activities place astronomical observation within a wider life of experiment, construction and public teaching, alongside long service as a Methodist lay preacher. [2]

A new racing venue

Tullyroan Oval was constructed in 2011–2012 as a new base for Davy McCall’s racing promotion, replacing its Nuttscorner operation. The promoter describes a purpose-built banked asphalt circuit outside the village, with spectator banks overlooking the track. Racing began there in 2012. Hot Rod, Stock Car and Banger events established the venue as a new sporting focus between Portadown and Dungannon. [3]
