Place & story

A small settlement beside the Foyle

An 1846 gazetteer description, reproduced with local newspaper transcriptions, places Newbuildings on the Foyle and the mail road from Derry to Dublin. It records twenty-one houses and ninety-six inhabitants in 1841. The same collection preserves reports of the nineteenth-century Goldsmiths Hall estate sales, including the townlands of Ballyore, Primity and Dunhugh. These records help connect the village with the surrounding land divisions used in property and family research. The small gazetteer settlement should not be treated as having the same boundaries as modern Newbuildings. [2]

People & connections

A school grows with Foyle Crescent

Newbuildings Primary School opened in 1955 with fifty-five pupils. Its own history connects the first intake with eighteen new houses in Foyle Crescent and children from neighbouring districts. Fred Simpson was the first principal, working with his wife Nancy, the school's second teacher. The original building had only two classrooms, with a folding partition separating teaching and dining space. As housing and enrolment grew, extensions followed. The school's account offers a close view of how post-war residential growth changed daily life in the village. [3]

Folklore & tradition

The phoenix and a remembered rebuilding

When the school introduced a uniform in 1981, staff members Esther Scobie and Michael Roulston designed a phoenix badge. According to the school's history, it represented a tradition that the earlier village of Goldsmiths Hall had burned in the seventeenth century and that new buildings later rose in its place. This is a documented example of local historical memory being incorporated into a community emblem. The account does not supply a precise date or independent evidence for the fire, so those details remain open. [3]
