Place & story
St Catherine’s
St Catherine’s retains a west doorway from the church of 1712. Gloine dates its nave to about 1820, noting that earlier walls and paving may survive. Joseph Welland designed the 1851 chancel with its three-light Gothic window. Richard Close added the lychgate in 1912. The church stands within the military camp at Aldergrove. [2]
The Presbyterian meeting house
The Presbyterian congregation dates its first Killead meeting house to about 1680 and the present building to around 1750. Its T-shaped layout and gallery placed worshippers around the central pulpit. In 1916 the congregation built a new school and teacher’s residence under the leadership of Dr Jack Irwin. [3]
