Place & story

The first school years

Parkhall Integrated College’s anniversary history records the school opening in September 1971 with 320 pupils in its first three year groups. John Graham was the first principal, assisted by Morris Jackson and Roberta Hughes. The school initially occupied its teaching block and D block, while other parts of the campus remained under construction. This was the beginning of a substantially larger institution. [2]

An expanding educational landscape

The offices, staffroom, assembly hall, gymnasium and music rooms became fully operational in September 1972. The college’s account also places its opening within the expansion of post-primary education in Antrim. At the start of the decade Antrim Secondary was the only other post-primary school; Antrim Grammar, St Malachy’s and Ardnaveigh had joined the town’s educational provision by the decade’s end. [2]

New buildings in the twenty-first century

The Department of Education records a new £20.7 million Parkhall school opening in January 2018, designed to accommodate 735 pupils. In September 2023 it announced construction of additional sixth-form accommodation, supported by £4.4 million from the Fresh Start Programme. These dated announcements document a further stage in the campus’s development; the 2023 notice marked work beginning rather than confirmation of the extension’s completion. [3]
