Place & story
A village across parish boundaries
Dunmurry townland historically lay partly in Drumbeg parish and partly in Shankill. The Drumbeg portion’s 1834 valuations list a Presbyterian meeting house, a corn mill and a beetling mill alongside fourteen substantial houses. This combination of agriculture and processing industries helped shape the village before its later suburban growth. [2]
A daughter church for Dunmurry
Church of Ireland residents long attended services at Drumbeg or Derriaghy. In December 1903, a petition from 56 heads of families asked Drumbeg’s select vestry for a church in Dunmurry itself. Saint Colman’s eventually opened as a chapel of ease in 1908, giving the village a local Anglican place of worship. [2]
