Place & story
A growing club
Lámh Dhearg began in 1903 as a rural football club serving Hannahstown. Its first pitch opened in 1984, when the club had seven teams. By 2021, growth in ladies’ football and camogie had increased pressure on its facilities. In an interview that year, Jim Herron recalled that land for a second pitch had been bought in 1992 but remained undeveloped for decades. [2] [3]
The pitch patrons
Members organised a patron scheme to finance the new pitch. By July 2022 more than 240 patrons had contributed, according to opening-committee chairman Paul Buchanan. Fundraising also included golf days and an auction following a club-history evening. Buchanan described the project as an investment in younger players, while plans for the opening celebrations included a tea dance recognising older residents’ support. [3]
