Place & story
Water power at Wolf Hill
Ligoniel’s nineteenth-century mills relied on the dependable flow of its river. While other Belfast factories adopted steam, local works continued using water power, with turbines installed at Wolf Hill Mill. Belfast Hills Partnership identifies the surviving mill fragment, bleach-green remains and two ponds as traces of the Wolf Hill Spinning Company’s complex, which continued operating into the 1960s. These remnants give the landscape a history beyond its present paths and open water. [2]
An association formed by residents
Local residents, businesses and community representatives established Ligoniel Improvement Association in 1974. Based at the Wolfhill Centre, it developed work in education, employment, housing and health as well as environmental improvement. In a 2022 interview, its chief executive described how the association maintained contact with residents during the pandemic, worked with the North Belfast Advice Partnership on food deliveries and continued its advice and advocacy services. [3]
Turning industrial remains into a community resource
The association purchased the wider dams and heritage site from a developer in 2008. It then invested in paths and interpretation signs, adapting former industrial ground for community use. In 2017, Damien McCallin described plans for an interpretive centre on the footprint of the derelict corn mill, with facilities for visiting groups. Those were proposals at the time; the purchase and path improvements were already part of the site’s transformation. [4]
