Place & story
The village war memorial
A lantern crowns the granite war memorial at the road junction in Stranocum. Polished pink marble panels carry its inscriptions, while a low curved wall and railings enclose the monument. War Memorials Online records both world wars among its commemorations and notes a June 1920 newspaper report of a fundraising bazaar for the memorial already erected. Its record also documents conservation support from the War Memorials Trust in 2007. [2]
Schools joining together
Bushvalley Primary School opened in September 1996 following the amalgamation of Ballycregagh and Stranocum primary schools. The school’s prospectus places the new institution on the former Stranocum school site, outside the village on Ballinlea Road. It describes a wider rural catchment extending to neighbouring settlements, including Armoy, Dervock and Mosside. The change brought two existing school communities together rather than beginning schooling in the area for the first time. [3]
Community work and a continuing tractor run
The Stranocum and District Community Association operated from 1998 until 2015, organising classes, events and local campaigns. When it wound up, it announced plans to distribute its remaining funds through village improvements and charitable donations, including a community-centre defibrillator and furniture for the refurbished park. Its annual fundraising tractor run continued under Roseyards Presbyterian Church, taking the name Dark Hedges Tractor Run. [4]
