Place & story

The former national school

Caddy's small settlement centres on the junction of Caddy Road and Tamlough Road, north of Randalstown. A council appraisal in 2017 recorded the survival of Caddy National School after educational use had ended. The school and community hall formed important public buildings within a small group of houses, with the land falling eastward towards the River Maine. The appraisal did not establish the former school's subsequent use. [2]

The hall and its drumming tradition

Caddy Orange Lodge's own 2011 account dates its warrant to 1 October 1829 and its hall to 1908. It describes the lodge's association with Caddy Fife and Drum and the hall's use for community activities. The festival programme included an exhibition there of banners, drums, photographs and other memorabilia. These records connect the building with both musical practice and the preservation of the lodge's material history. [3]

Nearby Drummaul church remains

South of the settlement lies Drummaul's old burial ground. Saint MacNissi's parish history identifies the surviving church remnants and graveyard near the Caddy and Coolsythe roads. It cites taxation records naming Drummaul church in 1306 and surveys describing it as decayed by the early seventeenth century. This is a separate historic church site near Caddy, rather than a former church within the settlement's central junction. [2] [4]
