Place & story

The butter-road endpoint

In his account of researching Once Upon A Road, Joe Harrington identifies Kerry Pike as the Cork endpoint of John Murphy’s turnpike from Ballyduhig near Listowel. Murphy secured an Act in 1747, with authority for six toll gates and a 61-year charging period. The road connected Kerry’s countryside with the boundary of Cork city. [2]

People & connections

A draghunting tradition

A 2021 interview with Marie Keating records Kerry Pike’s long association with draghunting. She described how the club joined Fair Hill Harriers after falling membership made independent operation difficult. Keating’s account places family participation and the work of older members at the centre of the club’s survival. [3]
