Wexford

Loch Garman

Wexford’s coast, river towns and older Leinster connections require several local histories rather than one story centred on the county town.

The name

These Irish name elements are associated with this record in the Logainm glossary.

Place & story

A maritime county

Lewis’s 1837 opening places Wexford between Wicklow, the neighbouring inland counties and Waterford Harbour, with long southern and eastern sea boundaries. His discussion gives the Slaney a central geographical role. Those connections help distinguish the county from Wexford town and its harbour. A port reference may concern departure, work or trade rather than the place where a person was born, and a rural county address may be far from the coast. [2]

Older regions and a royal centre

The directory associates northern districts with Hy Kinsella and the MacMurrough or Kavanagh lordship, with Ferns as an important royal centre. Its much earlier claims about ancient peoples and the origins of regional names are not adopted here as definitive etymology or ethnicity. Historical territory, later county and local parish are separate scales. A regional label can illuminate a narrative while still being too broad to identify a family’s exact home. [2]

Two towns on different parts of the water system

Lewis’s Wexford town entry describes a seaborne settlement and later borough history. Enniscorthy’s entry instead follows steep streets above the Slaney crossing and a town extending into Templeshannon parish. The county story includes both, alongside rural communities between them. For research, retain parish, river bank, street and date. A familiar town name may cover more than one jurisdiction, while an event elsewhere on the river should not be relocated into the county town merely because it shares the county name. [3] [4]
