Place & story
A house transformed into a castle
George Mathew built the earliest house at Thomastown around 1670. In 1812 Francis Mathew, second Earl of Llandaff, engaged Richard Morrison to enlarge and remodel it in Gothic style. The result incorporated the older house within a much more elaborate composition of towers and battlements. The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage traces its decline into disrepair from about 1870. [2]
The surviving architectural scheme
The ruins retain square and polygonal towers, pointed windows in the office wing and carved limestone window dressings. The gate lodge to the east repeats the main house’s castellated forms, including battlements and a polygonal tower. Walled gardens and the courtyard buildings preserve evidence of the working demesne beyond its principal rooms, helping distinguish this large estate complex from a medieval defensive castle. [2]
A village school in 1837
Samuel Lewis described Thomastown in 1837 as a village in Relickmurry parish on the Cashel–Tipperary road. Lady Elizabeth Mathew then owned the mansion and a demesne exceeding 2,000 acres. She supported a school attended by about 100 boys and girls, providing its master with an annual payment of £10, a house and two acres. Lewis also recorded a constabulary station and the ruined church used as the Mathew family burial place. [3]
Father Mathew and an archival photograph
Thomastown Castle was the childhood home of Theobald Mathew, who became a Capuchin friar. The Irish Capuchin Archives holds three glass-plate negatives dated 1913: front and rear views of the castle and an image of one of his letters. A note accompanying them records their transmission from Maynooth that November. The collection preserves both the building’s appearance and its association with Mathew. [4]
