Place & story

Connonagh House

The University of Galway’s Landed Estates research places Connonagh House in Gortroe townland, Kilmacabea parish. In 1852 John Morris leased the property to Barbara Jago, and the house was valued at almost£8. The record links the residence with both the Morris and Jago families, preserving a specific glimpse of occupation and landholding in the mid-nineteenth-century locality. [2]

The old store beside the mill

The building later known as the Old Mill Stores was formerly Moloney’s general shop, an early-twentieth-century premises beside an older mill, wheel and millrace. In an interview published in 2024, Tom Keane and Claire Graham described finding the property in 1999 and subsequently restoring it for a home and shop. The millrace’s connection with the Roury River and the store’s position on the main road brought water-powered industry and passing trade together. [3]

People & connections

James Eady and the Morris Arms

Police historian Tony McCarthy identifies Connonagh as the home of James Eady, born in 1882, whose parents owned the Morris Arms. Eady worked as a shoemaker before joining the Dublin Metropolitan Police inAugust 1904. He served first at Store Street and became a sergeant in 1920. His career, documented through the DMP register, connects the small West Cork settlement with the capital’s police force during a period of political change. [4]
