Place & story
Saint Luke’s church of 1831
Saint Luke’s Church of Ireland church at Clogh was built in 1831 with assistance from the Board of First Fruits. Its western tower has battlements and slender pinnacles, while pointed windows light the rectangular nave. The interior retains box pews, a timber gallery and decorative joinery. These fittings give the building significance beyond its tower’s familiar outline in the surrounding rural landscape. [2]
Plans signed by J. McDaniel
The Irish Architectural Archive identifies drawings for Clough church signed by J. McDaniel on paper watermarked 1812. They belong to the National Library of Ireland’s architectural collection. The archive treats the designer’s identity cautiously, noting that little is known about him. The watermark provides evidence about the paper used for the plans; it should be distinguished from the church’s documented construction in 1831. [3]
The parochial school
Samuel Lewis’s 1837 description of Leskinfere, also called Clough, records about 25 children attending the parochial school. Its schoolhouse had received a £60 grant from the Lord Lieutenant’s fund. The teacher’s support included annual payments from the rector and a charitable association, together with a house and an acre of ground. This was a modest institution within a larger parish, not a population count for the village. [4]
