Place & story
Healthcare supported by subscriptions
The Cratloe and Meelick Dispensary was founded on 6 January 1835 to provide medical care for poorer people in east Clare. Its surviving administrative records, held by the University of Limerick, show support from both private subscribers and public funds. Surgeon Thomas Kane of Limerick served as medical attendant. At first, subscribers distributed vouchers entitling patients to free treatment; problems with that system led to small charges from 1840, except for the most destitute. The dispensary continued through the Famine but faced funding difficulties by 1850. [2]
Austin Brennan of Meelick Cross
Austin Joseph Brennan was born at Meelick Cross in 1894 and attended the local national school before working on his family’s farm. He joined the Irish Volunteers in 1913 and commanded the Meelick company at Bunratty Castle during the 1916 Rising. In 1917 he helped campaign for Éamon de Valera in the East Clare by-election. Arrested with his brothers Michael and Patrick for illegal drilling, he joined them in a hunger strike seeking political-prisoner status. These activities connect his later military career with a specifically local beginning. [3]
Parteen and Meelick join forces
Meelick GAA Club dated from 1887, while neighbouring Parteen’s club was founded in 1885. Recruitment difficulties in Meelick helped prompt proposals to unite them in 2022. Separate meetings on 27 September approved amalgamation by large majorities, and Clare County Board ratified it on 11 October. The resulting Parteen-Meelick GAA and Camogie Club brought the parish under one club again after more than fifty years. Its own history records this as a new organisation built from two longstanding local traditions. [4]
