Place & story
The Purcell castle
Loughmoe Castle combines a fifteenth-century tower with a seventeenth-century fortified house added on its northern side. Tipperary Studies identifies it as the home of the Purcell family, Barons of Loughmoe, until the eighteenth century. Its archive includes a photograph of the ruins by Rev. Philip Fogarty, dated 1935. [2]
Schools across the generations
The school history supplied by Mgr. Maurice Dooley records a national school built in 1857 on a site leased from John George Adair. A replacement across the road from the church opened in September 1933, leaving the older building available as a parish hall. The new school contained four classrooms with separate entrances for boys and girls. [3]
Running water and flush toilets were installed in 1964. A later extension came into use on 31 March 2008, when pupils returned from temporary accommodation in the parish centre. These changes show how the village school was repeatedly adapted as expectations of classroom space and facilities changed. [3]
